American Eagle's latest advertising campaign, starring actress Sydney Sweeney, has become a veritable battleground on social media. The ad, which uses the slogan "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans" (a play on words like "jeans" and "genes," which sound similar in English), quickly drew heavy criticism from "woke" and leftist groups, who quickly labeled it "Nazi propaganda."

The controversy arose because the pun was interpreted as a glorification of "good genes," associating them with Sweeney's beauty, as she is white, blonde, and blue-eyed. Accusations of eugenics quickly began to surface on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), with some users claiming the campaign promoted beauty standards tied to whiteness in an already sensitive sociopolitical context in the United States, where diversity and representation are hot topics.

To make matters worse, the campaign, which intended to donate proceeds from the "The Sydney Jean" model (featuring a butterfly symbolizing support for victims of domestic violence) to the organization Crisis Text Line, was also criticized for allegedly oversexualizing the actress. Phrases like "makes your butt look amazing" and images focusing on Sweeney's cleavage were seen as contradictory to the goal of raising awareness about domestic violence, reinforcing the objectification of women.

Despite the barrage of criticism, the American Eagle campaign went viral and, ironically, boosted the company's shares by about 20%, resulting in an impressive $300 to $400 million valuation in just a few days. While some members of the public defend Sydney Sweeney and American Eagle, claiming the criticism is exaggerated and the pun is nothing more than a marketing ploy, others see the controversy as an intentional attempt to attract attention, especially from a more conservative audience.

Sydney Sweeney, for her part, preferred to remain silent in the face of the accusations, and American Eagle came out in defense of the campaign, reinforcing its focus on denim and the social cause that accompanies it. The controversy serves as a clear reflection of current cultural tensions, especially regarding aesthetics, representation, and the use of celebrities in advertising.
