XSEED Games surprised horror fans by announcing that the Corpse Party Tetralogy Pack for Nintendo Switch will no longer be released in the West, neither in physical nor digital versions of the games that were to be released there for the first time.

The company stated that, although it has already released titles from the Corpse Party series on consoles and digital stores in the West, it was informed that "the content of several games in the Tetralogy Pack did not comply with the platform's current guidelines." In simpler terms, the themes and heavier content of some of the games in the collection did not pass Nintendo's moderation criteria, a common setback when dealing with horror games with higher age ratings.

The Corpse Party Tetralogy Pack was released in Japan in August and includes four main titles from the franchise:

  1. Corpse Party
  2. Corpse Party: Book of Shadows
  3. Corpse Party: Sweet Sachiko's Hysteric Birthday Bash
  4. Corpse Party: Blood Drive

Fans hoping to re-immerse themselves in the dark settings of Tenjin Academy and face psychological horrors will have to seek out the digital versions available on the Japanese eShop, which, interestingly, support English subtitles.

Despite the cancellation of the Tetralogy Pack, XSEED Games has reaffirmed its commitment to working with MAGES to bring the sequel Corpse Party II: Darkness Distortion to the West (which was not part of the collection). The global release date for the new title, which promises to take the player to a new and disturbing survival scenario, has been delayed from 2025 to 2026 and is planned for Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.

For those unfamiliar, the Corpse Party franchise is a leading example of survival horror, focused on students trapped in a cursed school. The first game was originally released in 1996, and the franchise has inspired two OVAs (Original Video Animations), two live-action films, and several manga series, demonstrating its relevance in the geek horror universe.

Key Features (of the Franchise):

  1. Intense Psychological Horror: Narrative focused on despair, death, and supernatural elements.
  2. Retro Visuals: Artistic style that often recalls 16-bit games, contrasting with graphic violence and horror.
  3. Multiple Endings: Player choices that lead to different outcomes, including the infamous Bad Ends.

Corpse Party II: Darkness Distortion will be released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam in 2026.

I like several different works, but with a tendency for strange and funny stories.

I like arts, games, drawings and interesting things.
