Anime-style games are a worldwide success and currently represent one of the highest financial return categories on mobile devices. In 2021, these titles generated $16.97 billion globally, according to the latest report data.ai.

The report's conclusion is that for every $5 spent on mobile games, $1 is spent on an anime-style game. Compared to 2020, the increase was 6% in global spending. Japan is still the country that spends the most on anime titles, accounting for 15% of total installs and 55% of revenue.

And looking globally, player spending on anime games since 2018 has increased by 85% in South Korea, 75% in the UK and 70% in the US. And just last year, anime titles generated 658 million downloads globally, which is a 15% year-over-year increase. And downloads of anime titles have increased by 170%, 30% and 40% in South Korea, UK and US respectively since 2018.

According to the report, Pokémon Go was the most downloaded anime game of 2021, followed by Genshin Impact, SAKURA School Simulator, Pokémon UNITE and Gacha Life. And Genshin Impact became the highest-grossing anime title last year, followed by Pokémon Go, Uma Musume Pretty Derby, Fate/Grand Order, and Monster Strike .
