We're still recovering from the death of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in Avengers: Endgame, but the team led by Kevin Feige is already plotting who could give Iron Man a face in the next Phase 4 movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. According to a new report by subject expert Daniel Richtman, the studio wants Tom Cruise to play Iron Man in one of the multiverse timelines we will see in the film. What do you think about that?

Undoubtedly, MCU fans should already know this story, but if you are a neophyte on the subject, we tell you that long before there was a glimpse of a universe of films that brought together the best Marvel characters, there were countless attempts to make a adaptation of the beloved Iron Man. Universal tried in 1990 with Stuart Gordon and Fox did its job in 1999, with Quentin Tarantino apparently in charge. From the end of this decade, the character became strongly linked to Tom Cruise, who for years was thought to be the one who would bear the name Tony Stark.

In 2004, Nick Cassavetes signed on to the New Line Cinema label, before things collapsed once again and Iron Man's rights fell into the hands of Marvel Studios in 2005. As we all know, Jon Favreau was in charge of putting Robert Downey Jr in the role of one of the highest grossing and influential characters in the superhero genre in Iron Man, who quickly served as a launch pad for one of Hollywood's most lucrative and popular franchises.

As we mentioned earlier, the Iron Man we knew said goodbye to the MCU in Endgame and although fans speculated that the character would return to the franchise, Downey Jr.'s part was no more than a downside to returning to armor. However, the actor is not the only one who could play the beloved superhero and, according to Marvel expert Daniel Richtman, the studio wants Tom Cruise to bring the tycoon to life in an alternative version that we would see in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness:

They are considering a lot of cameos for Doctor Strange, different versions of characters we know. One example I heard they are considering is Tom Cruise as Tony Stark from another Earth (at one point, Cruise almost got the role of Stark before RDJ).

While the chances are high that this will never happen, especially since fans may reject someone else playing the character that gave the franchise its face in the previous stages, it does not mean that the studio plans to replace the special participation of Downey Jr. It would be interesting to feed the plot of the multiverse and open up the possibilities for other stories (including the return of other beloved superheroes like Chris Evans' Captain America).

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness remains scheduled for March 22, 2022, although we have to wait for the changes that will emerge in the coming months.
